Differential & Transfer Case Service

Differential Fluid

Replacement Interval: every 30,000 miles or 2-years as part of Infiniti Premium schedule.  Schedule 1 and Schedule 2 services do not include this important fluid in any of their intervals, so it should be added a-la-carte if following Schedule 1 or 2 program.  Beshoff uses quality Castrol EPX 80W-90 oil for differential fill which meets all manufacturer specifications.

The differential contains gears which connect your car's two axles. It consists of a drive pinion and ring gear to permit the rotation of two shafts at different speeds. Differential gears are part of the rear-axle assembly.  All wheel drive (AWD) and 4WD also have a differential on the front axle.  Differentials are used to convert the lengthwise flow of power from the engine through the clutches, transmissions, and propeller shafts into a right-angle direction. This change allows the engine power to turn the rear wheels (four wheel drive is used in some designs) and permits the wheels to move at different speeds, as when turning a corner.

The differential gears are lubricated in differential fluid to lubricate gear surfaces to prevent friction and wear. Normal driving subjects the fluid to high temperatures which eventually break down the fluid. The result is metal to metal contact and extremely high heat that eventually prevents gears from turning the car's wheels.   Correct fluid levels will reduce friction and wear and reduce shock and vibration.

Transfer Case Fluid (AWD & 4WD only)

All-wheel drive and 4-wheel drive Infiniti's are identified with and 'X' in the model name (e.g. G37X, QX56).  Rear wheel drive models do not have a transfer case.

Replacement Interval: every 30,000 miles or 2-years as part of Infiniti Premium schedule.  Schedule 1 and Schedule 2 services do not include this important fluid in any of their intervals, so it should be added a-la-carte if following Schedule 1 or 2 program.

The Transfer Case splits drive line power to front and rear differentials.  Transfer Case fluid lubricates and removes heat from internal components in the Transfer Case.  Transfer Case Fluid - much like front or rear differential fluid, needs to be replaced due to the degradation of the fluid's lubrication ability and the fact that tiny metal particles will be suspended in the fluid from the normal wear of the gears and bearings. Infiniti Transfer Cases use ATF oil that is designed to with stand the tremendous pressures created by the operation of the gear sets.
