The most common type of service required for brakes is replacement of worn pads. Infiniti disc brake pads have a soft metal clip on them called a 'wear indicator'. When enough of the friction material is worn away, the wear indicator will contact the disc and make a squealing sound.
Because it is soft metal, it will not harm the disc. However, the sound means it is time for new brake pads. The indicator touches the rotors when there is proximately 2mm of material remaining so your brakes will still function safely while you drive your car to the dealership. Brake wear is a function of use. Stop and go driving, mountain driving and towing wear the brakes most. Beshoff Infiniti uses only Genuine Infiniti brake parts during serving.
Infiniti recommends refinishing (also called turning or machining) brake rotors as part of pads replacement. This is accomplished using a lathe to machine a fresh surface. All brake rotors have a specification for the minimum allowable thickness before they need to be replaced. This spec can be found in the shop manual for each vehicle and is etched on the rotor.
Brake Rotors
Brake rotors wear similar to brake pads but a a slower rate. Sometimes,
deep scores get worn into brake rotors. Brake rotors can also warp,
that is, lose their flatness. If this happens, the brakes may shudder
or vibrate when you stop. Both of these problems can sometimes be fixed
by refinishing the rotors. Some
material is removed from both sides of the rotors to restore the flat,
smooth surface.
Brake Squeal
A quick Google search of 'Brake Squeak" will provide over 1.5 million pages. The bottom line is that some intermediate squeal is normal on in disk brakes of every brand car. Why some drivers experience this and others don't is mostly defendant on driving style- gentle drivers who brake early and softly will get the maximum life from their brakes but also experience "glaze" if the brake pad and rotor friction surfaces. Glazed brakes are more prone to harmonics which is the technical term for squeal. We see drivers who see a lot of top and go report experiencing squeal most often. Assuming the brake system has all components in good working order, with correct shims, pads and components withing the normal service life, no repair is required.
